We have started a family tradition to visit Island Park on Memorial weekend.  This year instead of staying on Hwy 20 we decided to take the scenic route and take the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway.  The drive is beautiful as you meander over the rolling agriculture landscape until you come to the Warm River.  I have been up the road many times, yet I seem to always forget how beautiful of a drive it really is.

There are many different areas where you can hike, one of those that is fun is to park in the Bear Gultch parking lot and walk to the old rail-road tunnel.  The tunnel is abandoned and is now closed off to entering but the walk is still fun and the views are spectacular.

The Mesa Falls are the only major falls which are not used for hydroelectric energy in the state of Idaho.  There are paved trails which lead down to the viewing decks.  The falls upper Mesa falls drops 110 feet and the lower 85.  The views from this secluded forest setting are beautiful.  Visit the Mesa Falls Lodge which has been recently renovated and offers some interesting facts about the area as well as a small gift shop.

Mesa Falls is just one of the many attractions that are only a short drive from Rexburg/Rigby area.  If you are not from the area, take the time to drive the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway.
